I Can't Breathe... Until You have Understood EXCRETION Here With Me

Hi people!! How are you doing? What about the return to school after the long weekend?? It won't be easy to BREATHE so early in the morning!! XD

Well, for you to remember that the verb is (to)breathE/d and the noun is BREATH , these the title of my post is connected to one of my personal favourites: HERE WITH ME by DIDO

Remember that we have a lot of systems and organs specialised in keeping HOMEOSTASIS and getting rid of harmful subtances or substances that are in INXS (KUAK! Another 80's band)

Let's get down to business!!

Captain Fries explanation and procedures in Gotham were not enough to understand respiratory system? Do you need extra info?

I think you might like this video for  an accurate picture of the system. WOW!!!!!

As you  can see, the respiratory system is basically a long tube with two sacs at the end, with NO bones, only cartilages inside the tube (to prevent it from collapsing) and muscles outside the sacs to make them larger or smaller. This tube is covered by a thin EPITHELIUM that is full of CILLIA and secretes MUCUS  to prevent bacteria and other harmful substances to get to the ALVEOLI.

I'm also including here some videos for you to revise your concepts:

1) An IGCSE video with a whole revision and a FIBROSCOPY of the RESPIRATORY SYSTEM where you'll see a real operating system  :)

2) The video I posted like a year ago in my facebook page about the effects of SMOKING on the Respiratory System:

3) I wanted to share with you the video on LARYNX that Bella and Rama made

4) And a superb video on hiccups that Mili & Pili (not like in MiliPili) created for you

One of my fav chick flicks is "What if" with the cutest Daniel Radcliff. His character used to study Medicine but he quitted when he discovered that his girlfriend was cheating on him. Now he is a total loser, living with his sister and nephew. This is one of my favourite scenes in the film

I believe that everybody should know how to apply this Heimlich manoeuvre as well as CPR  so, my padawans, we are going to learn how to perform them.
First of all, I'm including a superb course on first aids (on IG)  by UNHIPPIECONOSDE that you can watch with all the family (it's in SPANISH)

After watching it, for MONDAY, October 26th

1)  I would like GENTILE, HERMAN, KHALLOUF, PÉREGO AND ROSSO to record an INDIVIDUAL tiktok video/or IG reel explaining to me how to apply the manouvre to a member of your family! (in English of course!!)

2) To be able to practise your CPR, SALOMÓN, ALBARRACÍN, BRANDI, IBARRA, GAMIDDO, LOBENSTEIN, ORQUEDA, MENDEZ and PEREZ will build their own dummies following the instructions of the video made by Sofia, one of my students who is a lifeguard.

When your doll is ready (with the face that you like or no face at all), you will record an individual tiktok video or IG reel showing me how to apply the CPR.
Extra help with this video--> https://youtu.be/h8PLcXU69n8

My dummy is ready... (how mental can your teacher be?)

 3) ASTUNI, BIZAI, DROZ and SANTOS  will explain to me in an infogram or a tutorial (based on the information from pages 192-197 of our book) the different layers and functions of the skin, how it controls temperature and what negative feedback is

4) Though I'm a bit scared of needles and hepatitis or HIV, I have started to consider getting a tattoo to pay homage my favourite series.

Felipe Gutierrez Walker and Guada Cussi will prepare a tutorial explaining to me
A) Why is it that tattoos don't disappear if the epidermis is formed by dead cells that shed every 28 days?
B) The name of the systems that tattoos join
C) Can tatoos produce cancer??

5)  I didn't forget about the GONZALOS!!! They will prepare a tutorial on kidney failure, dialysis machine and kidney transplant

I hope the videos are useful and fun to watch (well, fun...not really, maybe just interesting) for you to start working on your assignments  Don't PROCRASTINATE!!!!!

To Vaccinate or Not To Vaccinate...Is That Even a Question?

As this Thursday we are going to talk about blood and its components, we will be talking about WHITE CELLS and VACCINATION. So, in the same groups of Super summary, I'd like you to tell me (in a few lines/ a kind of summary)
1) What is a vaccine?
2) What is an antivaxxer? Can you tell me the origins and the history of the movement?

This is the link to a great article on the same topic in one of my fav. science pages

http://www.iflscience.com/health-and-medicine/dear-parents-you-are-being-lied

Even Diego Golombek talked about this topic in his La Nacion column:

http://www.lanacion.com.ar/1695357-vacunar-si-o-si

Can you imagine a world without vaccines now that everyone is craving for the super vaccine that can save us from Coronavirus?

3) * The ending of the antibiotic era. Now what?
 https://www.ted.com/talks/maryn_mckenna_what_do_we_do_when_antibiotics_don_t_work_any_more

4) What is AUTISM?? And Spectrum Disorders??? Can Autism be cured with a diet as it says in this article?
 https://www.bioguia.com/salud/esta-nina-se-recupero-del-autismo-al-cambiar-solamente-su-alimentacion_29603782.html

I will also add two activities for you to do on Edpuzzle.

Quite a topic, isn't it? Please, read the articles as and we will discuss them on Thursday!!!

Throwback Monday to when my students made super cool videos

Hi, my fellow "master procrastinators". As I have been receiving a lot of super belated questions on how to make the videos you are supposed to hand in on Thursday, I decided to include an example from a previous year and some comments.

1) As you have seen, the video is a cooking programme like the ones in the Gourmet Channel where you must answer the 10 questions from "The Scientific Chef" WHILE COOKING. Please, add subtitles because sometimes the sound is not very clear. This example video is too long. Make yours between 5 to 7 minutes long.

2) The video IS NOT about the menu, which has to be handed in in a computer file following all the guidances on any practical work (A4 paper, references, cover, badge etc). The menu has to include the dishes you designed and the explanation on why you included those ingredients. (please, write the names of the different courses correctly)

3) The chart can be done in a real chart and photographed or digitally. Don't use charts from internet because the group that cheats will get an #InstantOne

Please, be creative! Quarantine is already boring and dreadful... I gave you almost a month in the hope that you would make something really cool to make my day.

See you on Thursday at 10!!!

PS: This is the complete chart we worked on last class.

And the #Challenge:
1) Which is the only diet (as a way of eating, not of losing weight) that has scientific proved endorsement?
2) What kind of food does it include? Why?
3) Why is it that any diet highlighted in yellow is bad for us? Why shouldn't we leave meat out of our dish???

#Challenge2

There are so many wrong ideas in this message I have recived that I can't even start correcting it. Can you do it for me??

To Eat or Not to Eat,That's The BIG Question

Hi, 4th yeaaaarrr!!! I spent last weekend with the Master on Neuroscience online classes. (Yeah, I DO get bored, too!)

But on Saturday morning we talked a lot about... FOOD and BRAIN. The nutritionist that was delivering the class talked a lot about DIETS so I remembered you and  the two missing groups that have complete the chart for me (and send it to me, please).

 https://drive.google.com/file/d/1UTNxOYuQ7WQAVVMUA9Ss_xayXey9_aSA/view?usp=sharing

We were also discussing on Saturday how a misunderstood study (or a totally prepared marketing campaign) made us believe (and use and teach) the benefits of the FOOD PYRAMID for a long time.

but...

So, which balanced meal plan should we use???

I'm also leaving here a great TED talk by my favourite chef JAMIE OLIVER. Although it's a bit old, his concepts are absolutely correct!!

OMG! My cellphone alarm is telling me my loaves of bread should be ready!
See you on Thursday!!!

                                               (poor Jesus!)

It's (not) all about the diet

Hi, my beloved students!!! How are you doing? How is this quarantine treating you? How many kilos have you gained so far??? XD
Well, the title of my post is connected to a very famous song we worked on in class. Do you know remember?

Yes!! Food, diets, stereotypes and all the concepts we have been discussing in class lately.

First of all, we discussed our distorted models. Sometimes, Photoshopping is not the best solution!!!
http://www.buzzfeed.com/elliewoodward/the-most-wtf-celebrity-photoshop-fails-of-all-time

I'll post a million super interesting videos for you to watch for us to discuss next class!! (Remember I would like to see your summary on these videos before Thursday)

1) This is Sandra's Amodt's video.

2) This is a great video on the Psychology of food based on the article written by Diego Golombek

3) Now, Let's discover why we are hungry!

>

4) Do you want to lose weight (but scientifically)??

5) Can I be a celiac?

Lat class, we also discussed the two meanings of the word DIET

1.
the kinds of food that a person, animal, or community habitually eats.--> WESTERN/EASTERN DIETS
2.
a special course of food to which a person restricts themselves, either to lose weight or for medical reasons

I would like to discuss with you some of the TRENDY DIETS people follow these days. For each diet, I would like to know:

*The notion behind it
*The restrictions they apply
*Creator of the diet
*Positive and negative points
*Calory consumption per day

Let's divide this  into 8 groups

VEGAN DIET: Santos- Salomón- Rosso
VEGETARIAN DIET: Perez- Pérego
DETOX DIET Mendez- Lobenstein- Khallouf
KETO DIET Ibarra- Herman- Gutierrez Walker
FASTING Gentile- Gamiddo- Droz
DR RAVENNA'S DIET Cussi- Campobasi- Campisi
PALEO DIET: Brandi- Bizai-Orqueda
ALKALINE DIET: Astuni- Albarracin

We will make a chart on Thursday comparing them.

As a part of this unit is about food and diet, I'm posting the questionnaire on the Scientific Chef for you to start working.

(You have a copy of this book in 3rd year booklet or you can download it from the link blow)

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1Az9VoTeL5xq_eFcpEbCtyipQ2E0qPkJO

The deadline will be Thursday April 23rd

Each group will have to answer ten assigned questions as a COOKING SHOW VIDEO (Gourmet, or Utilisima) no longer than 10 minutes, prepare a written menu and a digital chart with the content of sugar or salt in a certain group of food.(there are two examples in the questionnaire)
